Taisija Degubareff Obituary

Taisija (nee Schewtchenko), age 99, resident of Cincinnati, Ohio passed away at her home on Saturday, March 7, 2015. She was born in Kiev, Ukraine to parents Leontij Lawrence & Olga (nee Sowska) Schewtchenko on October 7, 1915. In the 1930's Taisija and her husband, Nicolai, escaped Russia and took a train to Germany where they later had their daughter, Olga. They were accepted to come to the United States through the Tolstoy Foundation in 1951. Taisija and her family traveled on the USS General Stewart naval vessel to the USA and arrived at Ellis Island where they stayed for 2 months. In the early 1950's, they moved to St. Louis where She worked as a chemist/physiologist at Washington University School of Medicine. Taisija was a key member in the research and studies, in the 1970s that led to MSG being removed from baby food. She was part of many studies and research projects with Dr. Olney, whom was a mentor to her. In the early 1980s, she retired to Virginia Beach and stayed there until she moved to Cincinnati in 1995. Taisija loved painting and spending time in her garden. She loved watching the news and staying abreast of all the world news. She also stayed in touch with modern medicine by reading medical books and other literature regarding medicine. Taisija loved her family and will be missed by many.

Those surviving who will honor her memory include loving daughter: Olga (David) McIntosh; beloved grandchildren: Katyana (Benjamin) Hickson, Dawn Schell, & Richard Dawson; great grandchildren: Stephanie, Genavieve & Rachael; cherished sister-in-law: Nadja Danett; and loving cousins: Victor (Paula) Danett, Julia & Natalie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband: Nicolai Degubareff; and cousin, Chester Danett.

Memorial Service will be held on Sat., March 21, 2015 at 4PM at the Brater-Winter Funeral Home, 201 S. Vine Street, Harrison, Ohio 45030. Memorial donations may be made to the Tolstoy Foundation Rehabilitation & Nursing Center through the funeral home.
